This albino tri-color is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful of all kingsnakes. The brilliant color and pattern
combinations are truly incredible. At birth, hatchlings have coral red-orange, yellow and pink rings. As hatchlings grow, an
ontogenetic color change occurs leading to the fullness of mature adult coloration and to one of the several possible adult color morphs. The adult albino color consists of immaculate coral red or orange, lemon-yellow, and pale white or light yellow rings. Each albino has a varying degree of red and yellow speckling or blotching on the head and red pigment (lacking in some adults) bordering the pale white or light yellow rings. The red and yellow speckling magnifies with age. A wide range of color combinations, color intensity, triad count and ring width (the coral red or orange rings vary from 2 to 7 scales wide) has resulted in multiple color and pattern morphs to emerge that are most evident in the adult albinos. We have identified at least 3 distinct types and have initiated the selective line breeding process to attempt to refine and consistently produce these types. The recessive albino gene was present in one of the original normal colored specimens collected to describe this species from the Mesa Central type locality of Amealco, Queretaro, Mexico. It has been a wonderful experience establishing and developing the albino ruthveni and a great success for Professional Breeders® in introducing this variety as the first albino tri-color to the commercial breeding industry.
