Top: The "Super-Hypo" Honduran Milk characterized by extreme width hypomelanistic orange bands, low triad count, and the overall hypomelanistic "look".

Inset: Close-up detail of typical Super Hypo eye mask shown below right.

"SUPER HYPO" HONDURAN MILK SNAKES - The most sought-after genetic trait available among the multiple color and pattern morphs of Honduran Milk Snakes. The "Super Hypo" genetic trait combines all of the best features of an extreme version Tangerine Honduran Milk Snake with the hypomelanistic gene. There are a total of 10 to 13 pre-vent orange bands that can measure at least 5 inches wide in 5 foot+ adults. The black bands begin relatively narrow in width mid-dorsally and are generally interrupted and replaced by orange along the lower lateral sides. This strain is also distinguished by stunning shades of tangerine coloration in both the "Super Hypo" and heterozygous "Super Hypo" specimens. The hypomelanistic trait is a simple recessive gene that inhibits the black tipping in the tangerine bands that is typical in normal Hondurans. The hypo trait also affects the color of the black bands, resulting in a bluish or gray-black coloration that is most pronounced in hatchlings and juveniles. Some encroachment of black tipping may occur in hypomelanistic specimens with age, predominantly in the narrow tangerine band. This strain originates from a wild caught "Super Hypo" heterozygous male imported in 1986. Although it is unrelated to the Bill Love strain of hypomelanistic Hondurans, it was determine that it is genetically compatible with the Love strain from an outbreeding we accomplished in 1996.

We will be breeding the "Super Hypo" trait to the additional color and pattern morphs listed to produce double heterozygous specimens of:

  1. "Super Hypo" x albino Hondurans leading to a super wide tangerine banded albino
  2. "Super Hypo” x anerythristic Hondurans leading to a "Ghost" Honduran
  3. "Super Hypo" x striped/vanishing pattern Hondurans leading to a hypomelanistic striped or vanishing pattern beauty.

Above: Albino Honduran Milk Snake from the original strain identified by a relatively high triad count. This adult male will be utilized in outbreeding to extreme quality tangerine females for first stage developement leading to a refined wide banded tangerine albino.

ALBINO HONDURAN MILK SNAKES - A unique combination of red, tangerine, and yellow bands are represented in this variety. Overall triad count usually numbers 20 to 24. We consider the Albino Honduran the best possible discovery of an albino genetic trait in the Milk Snake specie group. The attraction of large size and intense color combinations have moved the Honduran Milk Snakes into a class by themselves. Through selective breeding, a highly refined albino tangerine Honduran may well become the most popular albino tri-color. The combining of this albino gene with the other Honduran Milk varieties provides a multitude of present and future possibilities. This strain originates from heterozygous albino wild caught imported adults bred in East Germany in the late 1980"s. We are developing the refined appearance of the albino and heterozygous albino strains through multi-generational outbreeding to extreme quality tangerine phase Hondurans or the "Super Hypo" strain. We will also be producing double heterozygous specimens by breeding the albino trait to the anerythristic trait leading to a "Snow" Honduran and to the striped/vanishing pattern trait leading to a striped or vanishing pattern albino.

STRIPED AND VANISHING PATTERN TANGERINE HONDURAN MILK SNAKES - A highly unusual and variable genetic trait that is not yet fully understood in its path of inheritance. Striped phase, vanishing pattern phase, and normal hatchlings may occur in the same clutch. The number and quality of striped or vanishing pattern hatchlings in a litter appears to be determined by how concentrated (through selective breeding) the gene trait is in the adults. Despite the present unknowns the outcomes are simply gorgeous with the variations resulting in unique individual appearances.

Inset: Vanishing pattern Tangerine Honduran Milk Snake showing partial obliteration of the black bands replaced with overall tangerine body color

ANERYTHRISTIC HONDURAN MILK SNAKES - This recessive gene trait is responsible for the absence of erythrophores or red pigment cells resulting in a pale pink, black and white Honduran Milk. Low triad count specimens tend to have the most stunning appearances due to the wider width of the pale pink banding. This trait is key in the genetic pathways now available to develop multiple pattern and color morphs in Hondurans.
