This variety is among the most unique and sought-after lizards in the world. All of the members of the adult colony display the classic mottled salmon-pink or intensified orange coloration on a black ground color. At birth, hatchlings are yellowish white and black banded. In the first few weeks after hatching each offspring begins an ontogenetic change to the adult color and reticulated pattern, a process that continues through the second year of life. We have established six unrelated maternal bloodlines in the colony that are now producing annually. Selective second and third generation breeding for known locality history, pattern refinement, and extremes of high percentage pink or orange coloration is now being done. We are excited about the extraordinary hatchlings being produced as a result of this process. The colony has been established from zoo bred specimens and specimens on breeding loan from a university. A letter of transfer from Professional Breeders® and complete zoo and university documentation of legal origin of the founder stock will be provided with each hatchling(s) to satisfy all U.S. Fish and Wildlife possession requirements.

IMPORTANT:

  1. Egg hatching does not occur until early October. Usually hatchlings must be sent via air cargo separately from other ordered species due to the extended hatching time.

  2. A promising new DNA probe technique is being researched for sexing Gila hatchlings. Prior to conclusive findings, a 100% reliable and proven safe method of sex determination for hatchling Gilas is not available.
